inspirational quotes: Marcus Aurelius

“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”

Along with the quote:

“Be the change you want to see.”

Which has been falsely linked to Mahatma Ghandi (even while it remains an excellent precept to live by, in my opinion), put me in mind of a recent public discussion on Facebook where a friend was raging that people keep on highlighting their horror at the fires burning the Amazon rainforest down, but that they actually weren’t doing anything about it.

While I’m sure there are plenty of folk out there with double standards, I’d like to believe that there are less than I might think – perhaps that’s a result of the people I choose to surround myself with these days?

The talented people who twitter away happily on whatsapp messages on their way to work in the car, the people who laugh contageously, tears in all our eyes, the dirty and quick minded people, keeping me on my toes, and the generous and supportive souls who go out their way for others.

But that is just my opinion, my own perspective. There are billions more of both out there in the form of humans. Sometimes opinions suck, especially when they go against my moral codes, and so, when I read the following quote, it made me smile:

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact.

Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.”

Over the last year in particular, and as my 40th birthday draws ever nearer, I really feel I’m giving less import to what people say, and more import to what they do and how they live their lives – and that goes for me too!

So I guess I’m of the firm belief that:

“A person’s worth is measured by the worth of what he values.”

Do you?

“Look well into yourself, for there is the source of strength and courage which will always be there if you seek.”
