I was born in Kuwait to a Palestinian/Lebanese Catholic mother and a “British” father whose parents were of Latvian/German and Russian Jewish descent. Confused some?
My parents, younger sister and I lived in Bahrain until the Gulf War happened. We left everything behind. Not so tragic was the coming birth of my younger twin sisters that same year, in the UK.
Needless to say, we’re not your average family – something I take both pride in and am a bit miffed by at the same time. Imagine six of us in a four bedroom house and then our mother’s mother moving in, not really speaking much English but certainly could smoke the old hubble bubble, play 14 card hand rummy and drink copious amounts of the thick dark coffee the Arabs, Greeks and Turks love, the scent of cardamom seeds so lovely and spicy.
Arabs are loud. Did you know that? If you didn’t, try getting on the short 30 minute flight from Cyprus to Lebanon. Don’t put your headphones on – just sit back, watch, and listen.
You’ll soon wish you had ignored me, stuck your headphones in and put your music on full blast.
Big families are loud too.
You can imagine we were very loud.
And now I live in Luxembourg, some 20 odd years later, a “responsible” (I write this word lightly) woman, with a good job and a roof over my head. Oh yes, not to forget a fucking marvellous network of friends and acquaintances.
Nope, not married, no kids either, nor pets or a partner.
You’re probably wondering what the hell I do with my life, with all that “time”? Well, let’s see as we go along shall we?
I hope you enjoy these random scribbles…
Love,
Jojo xx
Good morning Jo, I never new that you could write so well! I am surprised and happy that you can and also what a lovely thing to say about your Grandmother, she would have loved to read what you have written about her, and not only that, she is the one who always said poems and also memorised them from books. You must have taken this from her. It is a wonderful talent to have and you have got that, please continue writing, do not stop, it is a gift from God. Do not stop. I read and felt every word, I loved it all.
God Bless you, my lovely girl.
Taita is smiling down on you. She would have said “Ya akrouti kibiri inti”.
We love you very much.

Yep. I totally agree. You are a recipe that is complex and intriguing. I’m going to guess there are a lot of tales waiting to be told, holding their breath until it’s time for release. Look forward to reading them. Could be a whole new take on Dr. Seuss’s poem–just retitled: The places you’ve been and the people you’ve seen. Happy writing. Happy revealing.
Cheers
